You likely already know Mrs. Becky Wright. She's been a counselor in our school district for 19 years, most recently at Cape Central Middle School. Still, we wanted to take a moment to recognize the fact that she is moving into a new role at CMS during the 2022-2023 school year. Mrs. Wright will be the new assistant principal this school year. To help new students and families get to know her a little better, check out the Q&A below.

Q: What can you tell us about your career path that brought you to your current role?
A: I started out as a Special Education teacher at Blanchard Elementary. I learned a ton working with students with all types of disabilities and needs. What I discovered was that I loved the Social/Emotional Learning component of what I was doing. That love drove my decision to go back to college and pursue a degree in Guidance and Counseling. After 19 years of counseling at both Jefferson Elementary and Central Middle School, I wanted to lead others! I went back to school and got a certification in Education Administration. Truth is I also loved going back to school and learning new skills and strategies!
Q: What or who inspired you to become an educator?
A: I was blessed with many great teachers, but I would have to say Mr. Bruce Sunblad and Mrs. Joan Wilson were two of my favorites. They had the biggest impact on me and it wasn’t their knowledge of the subject matter, it was the relationships they built with their students. They truly cared and showed interest in what we had going on both inside and outside of school. When someone asks me why I went into teaching, they are always at the forefront of my mind.
Q: Describe your leadership style.
A: I would like to say my leadership style is to collaborate and inspire! I want to build strong and trusting relationships where together we can make decisions and set exciting goals. My door is open to listen to my staff, provide resources and support. I want my staff to know I will always have their back, even when mistakes are made, I’m here to prop them up.
Q: What do you love most about Cape Girardeau Public Schools?
A: I love the family atmosphere of Cape Girardeau Public Schools. I feel like I am part of a huge network of staff, parents, and students. They are my village, my colleagues, and my friends.
Q: What are your hobbies away from school?
A: Honestly, with three daughters, I do not have a lot of time for hobbies. I do love Netflix. I have also developed a love for baking, thanks to my mom and all the “British Bake Off” I watched over the COVID shut down. (Ohhh… the amount of butter we went through was shameful). I also love to travel and hang out with my large extended family.
